Pet Food: Salmonella Alert


A nationwide alert for all pet owners out there, Nature’s Variety pet foods, prompting a nationwide recall. This product are said could be contaminated with a dangerous bacteria called Salmonella. The recall was announced on Thursday, February 11, 2010 by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.


The FDA reported that recall only involves the Nature’s Variety Chicken Formula Raw Frozen Diet sold in the following forms:
• 3 lb chicken medallions (UPC# 7 69949 60130 2) with a “Best If Used By” date of 11/10/10
• 6 lb chicken patties (UPC# 7 69949 60120 3) with a “Best If Used By” date of 11/10/10
• 2 lb chicken chubs (UPC# 7 69949 60121 0) with a “Best If Used By” date of 11/10/10

The “Best If Used By” date can be located on the back of the packaging above the safe handing instructions.


The recalled food, which is believed by some to be healthier for pets than diets based primarily on traditional, commercial pet food, which contains grains, fillers and other ingredients that cat and dog digestive systems may not handle well. According to the FDA, consumers are advised to return unopened packages of the recalled pet food to their retailer for a refund or replacement. Opened packages should be disposed of and refunds can be issued with a receipt. According to the company website, no human or pet illnesses have been reported in connection with the products.
