Kroger Pet Food Recall: Toxin Alert

The Kroger Co. are recalling selected packages of pet food sold in some of its retail stores because the products may contain aflatoxin, which poses a health risk to pets. Aflatoxins are naturally occurring mycotoxins producted by many species of the Aspergillus family of fungus, and are considered as among the most carcinogenic substances known. Aflotoxins are a common cause of otomycosis, a fungal ear infection that can cause pain, temporary hearing loss, and, in severe cases, damage to the ear canal and tympanic membrane.

Consumer who purchased certain brands of cat food, kitten food and dog food from Kroger stores between Oct. 23-Dec. 18 are being asked to check the product code.

The recall involves certain bags of Pet Pride Cat Food, Pet Pride Kitten Food, Old Yeller Chunk Dog Food, Kroger Value Cat Food and Kroger Value Chunk Food. The company advises customers: if you bought a contaminated bag of pet food, stop using it immediately and return it to where you purchased it for refund or exchange. They also advise buyers who consumed affected products to monitor their pets for symptoms of illness, including sluggishness or lethargy combined with a reluctance to eat, yellowish tint to the eyes and/or gums, and severe or bloody diarrhea. If any of these symptoms appear, they recommend consulting your veterinarian immediately.
